But near the 30km mark, Sawe, running only his second competitive marathon, broke free. After skipping a water station, Sawe unleashed a blistering surge: a 2:40 kilometre, then a 13:56 5K split. The pack disintegrated. On the Embankment, the lone figure stretched his lead with every stride. Sawe won by a quarter of a mile, announcing himself as Kenya’s next great marathoner.
