The current Indian list reads almost like a Pushkin Press catalogue, because Pushkin Vertigo, the dedicated horror imprint, has done the most consistent work bringing the genre to English in the last five years. Uketsu, the pseudonymous Japanese YouTuber-author, has been the breakout. His Strange Pictures, in which an unsettling story is told through the analysis of seemingly innocent children’s drawings, became a viral Indian Bookstagram phenomenon after its English translation in 2024. Its follow-up, Strange Houses, did the same. A third book, structured around eleven mysterious buildings, is being prepared for release.
